Deepest winter in Tuscany

Deepest winter in Tuscany
Winter in the vineyards of Tuscany

January and February are usually the coldest months of the year in Tuscany. However, there can be a few days of winter sun, which are perfect for walks in the countryside or for visiting cities and towns.

Average temperatures are between 3 and 10°C (37.4 – 50°F) during the warmest hours of the day, and between 0 and 5°C (32 – 41°F) at night. Occasionally, temperatures drop to -5 – 0°C (23 – 32°F), or below at night in the case of exceptionally cold weather. Temperatures in the mountains are below freezing, where snowfall attracts skiers (see the article ‘Tuscany’s Best Kept Secret!’

The days are short, with the sun going down at around 5pm. The trees are bare (except for olive and cypress trees, and some oaks), and so are grapevines (see the photo above). Roads become icy and slippery at night, snow chains and winter tires are mandatory from November 1st onwards.
