Only the Italians know Tuscany as a fantastic winter holiday destination!

Due to its fantastic food and wine, and rolling green hills dotted with tall thin trees, Tuscany has become a favourite summer destination. However, it isn’t an obvious choice for a skiing holiday. Well, you’ve been misinformed! The region is also a fun snowy wintersport area! In Tuscany you can actually ski!

The easiest resort to get to, Abetone, extends along the crest of the Apennine Mountains, and is about one hour away by car from Florence, Lucca, Pisa, Livorno, Modena and Bologna. Hence, this makes Abetone the Tuscan ski resort par excellence, hosting many important international ski races. The view from the summit of Mount Gomito, the resort’s highest elevation (1,930m) is incomparable. On sunny days it extends to the Tyrrhenian Sea, Versilia and Corsica. Looking to the north, the snowy peaks of the Alps stand out in the distance.

The resort is made up of two main ski runs, 70 km of downhill runs, about fifty cross country ski runs and 21 ski lifts. The downhill runs include Cutigliano, Pian di Novello and Doganaccia. The slopes themselves are situated between four well-linked valleys; Val di Luce, Valle dello Scoltenna, Valle del Sestalone and Valle di Lima.

The Abetone ski complex also organizes night descents under the moonlight including dinner in the “rifugio” (lodge), and special itineraries in the hidden snowy woods.

The cuisine is definitely Tuscan, typical and hearty mountain dishes, complemented with Chianti or Brunello wines which, as mentioned, can be enjoyed in one of the many lodges on the slopes, ideal for a quick stop, or in one of the more typical wood panelled  ambiences with private dining areas and spacious outside decks.

In Abetone everyone can ski, the facilities are equipped for the disabled with car parks, chair lifts without barriers and specific ski courses.
